PHIL 1020 is a general introduction to philosophy covering the period from the late Enlightenment (1780s) to the present day. Philosophers covered include Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Marx, Darwin, Mill, Nietzsche, Virginia Woolf, Camus and Beauvoir. Topics include: is there progress in history? what are the origins of our moral ideas? what rights to individuals have? what is social justice? does life have a meaning? can there be equality between women and men?
